I want to greet you on this Lord’s Day in the name of our Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
God has not called us together today as His people to puff us up, soothe our insecurities or give us hope to follow our dreams. In fact, He has permitted Satan to come many times this past week to accuse us of our sin and guilt before the Almighty. This great accuser of the brethren has put before our eyes time and time again our terrible inclination to satisfy the flesh, our weak and feeble attempts at obeying God’s commands, our many acts of rebellion, and the stain of worldliness on even our best deeds.
But God will mercifully remind us yet again today that while Satan accuses us of our guilt, he cannot condemn us. For the child of God these accusations do not come with the power to produce despair or hopelessness in our hearts. They come that we might not lose the wonder of our salvation. They come that we might not deprive the Triune God one speck of the glory that is His in our redemption. There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For behind every accusation there stands the one great Mediator shining forth His righteousness in our place.
We gather as a people today guilty of the many crimes laid out against us and yet beloved by the Father through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. The louder the accusations in our ears the more joyfully we should sing with our lips as our eyes look upward to the One who made those accusations powerless against us. AMEN.
