I want to greet you on this Lord’s Day in the name of our Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
In the fifth chapter of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, husbands and wives are commanded to be a reflection of Christ in the way they uniquely serve one another. For example, consider verses 25-27:
“Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle, or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.”
As each family under the servant leadership of the husband is to gather and interact throughout the week in a way that cleanses and sanctifies them through the Scriptures, so we as the bride of Christ are to gather and interact together on this Lord’s Day under the rule of our Head, Jesus Christ that He might wash us by His Spirit.
What does this look like? The Holy Spirit which God promises to pour out on us corporately even as He has deposited Him within our hearts individually, is often described as water. This watering of the Spirit produces the fruit of righteousness in our lives, it satisfies our thirsty souls, it cleanses and purifies our minds and hearts, indeed, it is the spring from which all heavenly riches flow forth to us from Jesus Himself.
The Triune God has called us to gather by the River this morning. He is called the river of living waters. Every man, woman, boy, and girl who is planted beside this River becomes a mighty tree fruitful and strong. And the church, His bride, is made more and more beautiful as she wades deeper and deeper into His glory and grace. AMEN.
