A Father’s Blessings

I want to greet you on this Lord’s Day in the name of our Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Like a good father who calls his children to the table each morning for breakfast, our Heavenly Father has called his children together today. As the children come, they sit down to a great table full of the finest foods. They did not have to work the ground to grow the food. They did not have to labor throughout the previous week to earn enough money to buy the food. They simply come with child-like gratitude and eat what’s been given for their nourishment and their enjoyment.

We gather today around a table prepared for us by our Heavenly Father. It is a table rich and overflowing with good things: blessings, promises, hope, resurrection, grace, truth, and glory. Our Father, like any good father, loves to give good things to his children. He is not a supervisor paying us according to what we have earned. He is not a taskmaster paying us less than what we deserve. He is a Father who feeds us today simply because we are His children and He loves us with an everlasting love.

Our duty as children is to guard against ungratefulness for what has been given to us today. We are to guard against taking this meal for granted, sitting down to eat thinking only of our appetite with no thought toward the Father who labored to provide it.

A good father will faithfully provide everything his children need while at the same time teaching them how to do the same for their children. As our Heavenly Father feeds us today on the bread of the Word and the wine of the Spirit, let us remember that such a great feast comes through the terrible work of redemption as Christ laid down his life for us. Let us also learn from Him, that we might lay down our lives for one another. AMEN.
