I want to greet you on this Lord’s Day in the name of our Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
As the Lord gathers His people today in all parts of the earth, there are two common petitions that will be lifted up in almost every place. First, we pray that the Lord would bless us and keep us and make His face to shine down upon us. Second, we pray “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” In other words, we come together to receive the blessing of renewed life and the promise of a renewed heaven and earth.
It is interesting that in Zechariah, one of the pictures given by the LORD of evidence of God’s blessing and promise is the abundant presence of the old and the young. Listen to Zechariah 8:4-5…
“Thus says the LORD: I have returned to Zion and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem shall be called the faithful city, and the mountain of the Lord of hosts, the holy mountain. Thus says the Lord of hosts: Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand because of great age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets.”
When the eyes of a people turn away from seeking the favor of the Lord; turn away from seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, one of the evidences of their rebellion is that the old and the young are increasingly despised.
Where the blessing of the Lord comes, old men and old women will be held in the highest honor. Where the kingdom of God is advancing, children will fill our homes with joy and gladness.
This Lord’s Day let us worship the Triune God who forms life in the womb and preserves life beyond the grave through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN!
