I want to greet you on this Lord’s Day in the name of our Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We have been called together today into the marketplace of grace called the Church. It is not a marketplace like that found by Jesus in Herod’s Temple. Those tables had no place in the house of God and Jesus rightly dealt with them in the clear, uncompromising voice of a swift whip and a stern word.
This marketplace has but one table, and it is all the table we need. It is a table where we bring our anxiety and trade it for anticipation. It is where we offer our cares and receive comfort. God does not call us to this place because we have earned the right to be here. This is not some dance and pony show with a ticket-counter at the door. This place, this table, is for the poor in spirit. It is they who shall see God. So bring your empty promises, your broken dreams, your scars, your worries, your failures, your good intentions, your self-righteousness, your grumbling words, your critical spirit. Bring all the trinkets that this world will try to convince you is real treasure. Bring them to the marketplace of grace and receive what can only be found here. If you come in faith, you will not be met by Jesus with whips and wrath for He Himself took the lashes in your place. He gave so that He might give. We come so that we might receive.
And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. -Revelation 21:6
